Accreditation and Financial Information
The Wolfsonian received accreditation in July 1999 and re-accreditation in 2006 (through 2019) by the American Association of Museums. Accreditation certifies that The Wolfsonian is operating according to standards set forth by the museum profession, manages its collections responsibly and provides quality service to the public. Of the 17,500 museums operating in the United States, approximately four percent are accredited.
Fiscal responsibility and accuracy is monitored at the museum, university, and state levels. Because The Wolfsonian is a department of FIU, we are not permitted to operate in a deficit; and FIU, as an agency of the State of Florida, in accordance with state structure, is subject to three separate annual audits of financial, operational, and federal programs expenditures, performed by the Office of the Auditor General. Auditors conduct extensive tests of internal controls, annual financial statements, and expenditures of funds. Also, in accordance with state structure, grant funds are maintained in the Sponsored Research Trust Fund, which, deposited into the University treasury, is also subject to the audit of the University Comptroller’s Office. The FIU Foundation, Inc., oversees the accounting of all donations to The Wolfsonian from individuals, corporations, and foundations, and manages all endowment funds. These are subject to the same rigorous standards as other state funds.
