Description:
Ink on paper offset color lithograph for Arbeid voor de Vrouw (Work for Women); image depicts a young woman warrior surrounded by women of all social classes surmounted by a sphinx, a motif much favoured by the Symbolists for representing the human mystery; the model for this important feminist poster was Marguérite Helfrich, later Mrs. Snijder van Wissenkerke, of whom Toorop made many drawings; the poster bears a band of text in capital letters at the bottom.
