Over a period of several years, artist Michele Oka Doner and Wolfsonian founder Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. collaborated on the book, Miami Beach: Blueprint of an Eden (Collins Design, 2007). Ms. Oka Doner, a founding trustee of The Wolfsonian and longtime advisory board member, donated her collection of research, including photographs and printed ephemera documenting the cultural life of Miami Beach. The captions accompanying the works are excerpted from the publication. The Carib Theater, c. 1950/ The Carib Theater on Lincoln Road, designed to be one of the most exciting and modern theaters in the world, opened on December 22, 1950. Outdoor Fashion Show at the Roney Plaza, early 1940s/ The outdoor fashion show was a popular form of entertainment for visitors, residents, and prospective buyers as well. Miami’s Fashion Council sponsored two major fashion shows each year, and the Roney Plaza, with its large and luxurious garden, was a popular site. The Roney Plaza Hotel, 1950s/The Roney Plaza Hotel, a pink confection that dominated the Miami Beach skyline from 1926 to 1966. The Tropical Garden Show, c.1950/ Miami Beach City Hall on Washington Avenue, 1940s/Miami Beach City Hall at 1130 Washington Avenue, designed by Martin L. Hampton, 1927 to 1928, was the site of the mayor’s offices.
