During Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art world colonizes Miami, in the best possible sense of the word. The Wolfsonian’s range of innovative programs and exhibitions makes it the perfect starting point for your Art Basel adventures.

Groundbreaking artist Coco Fusco sets the stage for Art Basel with her pre-festival talk Restore, Represent, Reenact, Re-perform: Live Art in the Era of Endless Replay on Monday, December 2 at 7 pm. Fusco, a Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and critic, discusses works including her most recent installation, And the Sea Will Talk to You (2012), which explores physical and emotional aspects of the sea journey between Cuba and the United States. “Fusco’s work…carries a deeply challenging perspective that illuminates in creative and sometimes confrontational ways the prejudicial niceties of American society,” according to Hyperallergic.

Fusco is the 2013 Visiting Master Artist in FIU’s department of art and art history and the author of several books, including A Field Guide for Female Interrogators and Only Skin Deep: Changing Visions of the American Self. Her awards include a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2013 Fulbright Fellowship, a 2013 Absolut Art Award, and a 2012 US Artists Fellowship. The event is free and open to the public.

On Friday, December 6 from 8 to 11 pm The Wolfsonian hosts its annual Art Basel VIP party. This year’s celebration takes place in conjunction with the Rebirth of Rome series of exhibitions, showcasing a stunning range of design objects, epic murals, and architectural documents from interwar Italy. The exhibitions are: Echoes and Origins: Italian Interwar Design; The Birth of Rome; Rendering War: The Murals of A. G. Santagata; and the library exhibition From Italy to the Americas: Italo Balbo’s 1930 and 1933 Seaplane Squadrons. Also on view in The Wolfsonian’s Bridge Tender House is Bust of a Doctor, an installation by Gideon Barnett. The VIP party goes multinational with a contemporary take on the French Swing tradition as Albert et son Orchestre perform original songs in French and English, with Albert on the accordion. The event is open to Art Basel and Design Miami/ VIP card holders and Wolfsonian Diplomat-level and above members.

The Wolfsonian hosts events throughout the week of Art Basel. A highlight is the American Museum Network Conference MUSCON 2013, co-presented by The Wolfsonian, Design Miami/, and the Vitra Design Museum. The conference is a networking and exchange platform for museum professionals and includes roundtable discussions at which museums present traveling exhibitions and future projects to colleagues. Registration for MUSCON is open until November 22 and there are no fees. Go to the MUSCON website [1] to register online.
