The Breath Eaters

December 4, 2023–January 28, 2024
The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue

The Breath Eaters, an animated, custom software work by new media artists Marina Zurkow and James Schmitz, visualized particulate pollutants using near-real-time data to comment on the widespread impacts of human activity. Inspired by Second World War-style maps, an AI-generated globe displayed an immediate, rotational impression of air contamination around the Earth, modeling fossil fuel plant emissions, wildfire smoke, and their free movement across land and water. In a world constrained by national boundaries, the artists drew attention to pollution's transnationalism and invited the viewer to take planetary action.

Presented in connection with The Big World: Alternative Landscapes in the Modern Era and Bridge Deconstruction Site  and in partnership with Wasserman Projects, Detroit, with the generous support of Gary L. Wasserman and Charles A. Kashner.
